Where my fellow Janeites at?
Jane Austen was truly one of history’s OG Tough Cookies. She wrote the book (several actually) on strong, independent female characters who aren’t afraid to travel and forge their own path. So in honor of her, I thought I’d compile some of my favorite Jane Austen quotes from her most iconic and inspiring heroines in the hopes that they give you the boost you need to go out and seek your own adventures.
Elizabeth Bennet, Pride & Prejudice
“There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.”
Elizabeth is possibly the most widely known and beloved of all Jane Austen’s leading ladies. And for good reason. She had an inner strength and resilience that would make Ghandi jealous. If there’s one thing we can learn from her, it’s the courage to face our fears, be they other people or our own preconceived notions, as we explore more of the world and ourselves along with it. There are many dangers out there (and within) for sure, but I hope your courage will always rise with every attempt to intimidate you.
Emma Woodhouse, Emma
“I always deserve the best treatment because I never put up with any other.”
If only we could all remember that! Especially when we’re exploring new destinations and situations where we don’t know what to expect or how we’ll be treated. Well conveniently there are several film and TV versions of this Austen classic, including a new movie just released this year, as well as the original novel itself of course. So there are plenty of reminders at your disposal if you ever need one, wherever you are.
Marianne Dashwood, Sense & Sensibility
“It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do.”
Things are usually much easier said than done. But actions speak louder than words. Especially when it comes to your own personal growth and character. Jane Austen knew this. So I think this is her way of giving us all a very proper kick in the pants. Have you been talking about wanting to get away? Go on a trip? Travel the world? Well then don’t just talk about it or think about it. Go do it!
Anne Elliot, Persuasion
“My idea of good company…is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation.”
I have to agree with Mr. Elliot (though really only about this) when he replied, “You are mistaken, that is not good company; that is the best.” And the best part is, you can find that good company anywhere in the world. So as you travel and meet new people, remember these words. Seek out such clever, well-informed people and great conversations at each destination, and I have no doubt they will make the trip entirely worth it.
Fanny Price, Mansfield Park
“We have all a better guide in ourselves, if we would attend to it, than any other person can be.”
Fanny is one of my favorite Jane Austen characters. So solid and constant and sure of herself, even when she’s unsure. She faces every new challenge – whether her relatives’ ridiculous behavior or her unrequited love for Edmund – with immense courage and compassion, like a true Tough Cookie. And this quote is a perfect example of that mindset. So when you’re on your travels, remember that you have a truer guide inside yourself than anyone else around you, if you have the courage to hear it and heed it.
Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey
“If adventures will not befall a young lady in her own village, she must seek them abroad.”
Okay this quote was said about Catherine rather than actually by her, but the sentiment still remains the same. It’s a reminder that, like Catherine, we all need to occasionally step outside our own spheres to find adventure and experience new things. As our horizons grow, so too does our courage, our tolerance, and ultimately our understanding of the world. Catherine certainly took this idea to heart, and so should we!
